Importance of Trees in Christmas

Christmas trees are associated with the Christian belief of celebrating Christmas by decorating real or artificial evergreen coniferous trees. The trees that are commonly used include Fir and Pine. They are available in the market in different shapes, forms and sizes. It is an expensive crop grown throughout the colder regions of the world.
Legends and traditions show that there is union of many customs belonging to the Christian beliefs and outside Christian customs.

Origin of Christmas trees

The practice of decorating Christmas trees for celebration was started in Germany. They are usually artificial or real evergreen coniferous trees. The practice of decorating Christmas trees as a custom started in the beginning of the 19th century. There are many stories and beliefs associated with the origin of Christmas trees.

One belief is that Martin Luther is responsible for the origin of these Christmas trees and their celebration. He established this tree as a symbol of the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. Another belief is that the Germans placed trees outside their home with the hope that spring would come soon.

There were many objections about Christmas trees. Many criticize this custom as it results in cutting of trees.

It is also believed that St. Boniface, who went to Germany, had cut down the Oak Tree when he saw pagans worshipping it. He later found that a young Fir tree grew from it due to which he was surprised. He took this as a sign of Christian faith.

It was only after the 16th century that these trees were brought indoors and decorated. Fir pointing upwards signifies heaven and it is considered to be a good omen to keep it at home. They also have medicinal properties.

Living Christmas trees are popularly used in Virginia and after the celebrations, they are not disposed off. They are used as landscape gardening.

Significance of Christmas

Christmas is celebrated on 25th December to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is widely celebrated by Christians and non-Christians. It is a popular festival of exchanging gifts, greeting cards and of celebrations, prayers, and decorating Christmas trees and lights.
